Shaw Communications Inc. (SLR.B, SJR.PR.A, SJR.PR.B) with $14.3B in assets operates in three divisions: the Consumer division provides customers offering broadband Internet, Shaw Go WiFi, video on demand and digital phone carried over cable; the Wireless division provides wireless voice(cell phone) and data services; the Business Network Services division provides business customers with Internet, data, WiFi, telephony, and video. They entered the wireless segment in Mar-2016 with the acquisition of Wind Mobile for $1.6B becoming the fourth largest cell phone provider in Canada after BCE,(BCE), Telus(T) and Rogers Communications.(RCI.B). Wireless capabilities were expanded with the acquisition of wireless network capabilities through the acquisition of wireless spectrum licences from Quebecor in Jul-2017 for $430M. On Aug-1-2017, Shaw Communications sold 100% of ViaWest for US$1.675B in cash, compared to the original investment of US$1.2B. ViaWest was part of Shaw's business segment providing data centre infrastructure, cloud technology and managed IT solutions in North America. On Apr-1-2016, Shaw Communications sold 100% of Shaw Media to Corus Inc. (CJR.B) for $2.65B comprised of $1.85B of cash and 71.3M Corus Class B non-voting participating shares representing a 37% ownership interest in Corus. Shaw Communications agreed to retain one third of the shares for 12 months post-closing, one third for 18 months post-closing and the final one third for 24 months post-closing.

Shaw Direct is one of two licensed satellite Video services currently available across Canada. While Shaw Direct has many customers in urban centres, market penetration for satellite video is generally stronger in rural areas. The service is marketed through Shaw Direct and a nation-wide distribution network of third party retailers.
