Deep divides between energy development and preserving the environment, along with the NAFTA negotiations has been negative for Canadian financial markets since the beginning of the year. While Canadian markets have had their share of problems, the performance of most every major global market has performed much the same. From a global perspective, possible US tariffs are a factor as well. In addition, central bankers are fixated on raisin interest rates with no end in sight, at least according to them.
When in the midst of major uncertainties, it is difficult to accept they are almost always temporary and often opportunistic. Comments this week look at the steady increase in oil prices, including narrowing spreads between Canadian and the WTI benchmarks, why trade tariffs are so complicated to enact, and the longer term outlook for interest rates.
