Moving on from a 35 year period of declining interest rates is uncharted territory for central banks and markets. Between the turn of the century and 1981 the trend for interest rates was higher peaking in the upper teens, and since then progressively lower, to nearly zero. Adding to the central banking confusion is trade protectionism, originating from the leader of the largest economy in the world, and mimicked by others. Having both of these situations occur simultaneously is proving disruptive for financial markets. Comments this week put these events in perspective, keeping in mind both these situations are transitory and are likely to be more than factored into prices.
