Markets crave certainty, and cave in when visibility diminishes. There is currently a litany of problems, like the markets have never faced before. The epicenter of surprises has been the US, but the pain is worldwide. On average markets are still lower by 14.7% from all-time highs in early March 2020, but have recovered by an average 31.6% from the lows reached in late Mar-2020. The first half of 2020 has been a wild ride. Of interest, China has had the lowest volatility.
Volatility is expected to remain elevated for 2020, stretching into the second half as there are significant intertwining issues without easy solutions.
A pending and highly polarized US presidential election, escalating racial discontent, rapidly rising government debt and a US economy heading into recession are a substantial list of problems.
