Using social media to gain dictator-style control over a country demonstrates how large a role technology can play. Still, using the internet for social media applications is just a small piece of the historical picture.

Betrand Russel (May 18, 1872–February 2, 1970) identifies four basic human desires that drive behavior. They are the desires to acquire, for rivalry, vanity, and the love of power. For yet another time in the span of history, the world is witnessing abuse of these desires, with a boost from 21st century technology.

Vince Flynn, author of the political thriller, Transfer of Power (1999), would have never imagined the White House attackers recording themselves in action, then broadcasting it for all the world and the authorities to witness. This whole affair was fortunately more about vanity that a realistic coup attempt. Still it is a reminder of the fragility of democracy. There are many questions to be answered about the latest outbreak in the long history of insurrections. For now, preference for a quick return to democracy is gaining momentum. Some fireworks along the way are expected.
