For a second time in the 21st century, economies are in dire need of a bail out. The proposed $1.9T US government stimulus package is heading for approval by the Congress and Senate once VP Kamala Harris casts the tie breaking vote. Weaker US and Canadian employment data last week and suggestions from the Bank of England for negative interest rates are energizing the effort.

The last bail out episode of this magnitude was the Global Financial Crisis in 2008. Back then a flood of money from central banks and government was the rationale for the eventual issuance of more than 300 rate-reset preferred shares from corporate Canada. The widely accepted belief was that interest rates were heading higher, investors wanted to protect principle from the ravages of inflation. During the ensuing 12 years this never came to pass. Technology played a huge role in keeping inflation under control, the same could happen this time even with the huge amount of stimulus provided by the Biden plan. As always there are a number of possible outcomes when this much money enters the financial system, comments this week consider these possibilities with strategies for profit.
