The convergence of several trends is creating confusion about inflation and the direction of interest rates. Just-in-time inventory management, monetary and fiscal policy, climate change and energy costs are sending mixed signals.

Just-in-time inventory management practices, key to the functioning of supply chains, are being disrupted by a global pandemic. The disruption from COVID extends beyond the supply side. Demand is being spurred by overly generous monetary and fiscal policy, and front-loading of buying, adding to the imbalance. This gives the impression of inflation. Adding to this disruptive mix are rising energy costs caused by a lack of understanding and preparedness for managing climate change. Earnings reports for Q3 are just weeks away, these issues are likely to surface; comments this week provide more detail.

Earnings updates include Bridgemarq Real Estate Services (BRE), AGF Management Ltd. (AGF.B), CI Financial Corp.( CIX) and IGM Financial Inc.(IGM). Residential real estate has been a huge winner from the COVID crisis. Bridgemarq earns royalties on revenues generated by more than 19,000 realtors associated with the Royal LePage, Via Capitale and Johnston & Daniel Brands office across Canada. Brookfield Asset Management (BAM.A) is the controlling entity. Prior to the pandemic they increased their slice of the action from changes to the management agreement. This has been more than offset by the increases in real estate sales. Behind this is demand for more suitable work at home digs, and owning residential real estate as one of the best hedges against inflation. The yield is 8.2% paid in monthly amounts; the primary risk would be a reversal of fortunes in the residential real estate markets.
