In the longer term, higher energy costs seem inevitable. It will take more, not less energy to tackle climate change, while maintaining economic growth and standards of living. Demand for energy is nearly insatiable; the issue is price.

This will be tested if the European Union proposed ban on Russian oil imports is ever enforced. No mention has been made for a similar ban on Russian natural gas. For now Russia has the upper hand as the major supplier of natural gas to much of Europe.

Rising prices for almost everything is the red hot topic these days, central bankers are in panic mode over inflation. They are bent on pushing interest rates higher to stem the tide of rising prices including energy costs. The news is looking positive for energy, the risk is central bankers raise interest rates by enough to curtail the energy price surge. This could be too much, sending the economies into recession.
